German MPs were victims of hackers from the Russian secret service

Members of the Bundestag and local parliaments were subjected to cyber-attacks. According to German intelligence agencies, Russian intelligence may be behind the hacking, writes Spiegel.

At least seven federal deputies and 31 members of parliament from the land legislatures tried to hack the personal e-mail. It is assumed that we are talking about the group of hackers Ghostwriter, allegedly associated with the Russian special service GRU.

Hackers are known to have used phishing emails. Whether they managed to achieve information leakage is not reported. Politicians from the parties belonging to the ruling coalition were attacked. The attack also affected political activists from Hamburg and Bremen.

In February, the head of the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD), Erik Akerbom, spoke about catching hackers from Russia and China: according to him, they threaten the country’s security, infrastructure, and business on a daily basis.
