The US Department of Justice estimated the damage caused to the Capitol as a result of the January assault by supporters of Donald Trump at $1.5 million. This was reported on Thursday by The Washington Post.
According to her, the damage assessment is contained in the documents of the trial of one of the cases concerning rioters in the US Congress. The prosecution intends to try to recover this amount from the defendants: $500 each from those who are found guilty of committing less serious offenses, and $2 thousand each from those who are under a more serious article.
The publication notes that the principle of calculating this amount is not completely clear. Representatives of the chief architect of the Capitol confirmed that they provided the US Department of Justice with their assessment of the damage, which formed the basis for the department’s calculations.
