The EU will keep its internal borders open, but …

The European Commission intends to keep the borders within the EU open but strongly discouraged unnecessary travel, backing “proportionate sanitary measures” at the borders. This is stated in the EU vaccination strategy published by the European Commission and measures to combat the pandemic. The document will be submitted for approval to the leaders of the countries of the community on January 21 at the EU online summit.

“While strengthening the response to the pandemic, freedom of movement [within the EU] and the single market must be preserved. All non-compulsory [cross-border] travel must be strongly discouraged until the epidemiological situation dramatically improves. Proportional travel restrictions, including passenger testing, must be maintained for areas of increased risk “- the document says.

“Complete border closures are ineffective, disproportionate, undermining the economy, and ineffective. We confirm that until the necessary level of protection, thanks to vaccination, movement control is necessary, but these measures must be proportional to the epidemiological situation, targeted and limited,” he stressed, in turn. Deputy Head of the European Commission for the Promotion of the European Way of Life Margaritis Schinas.
