The US accused Russia of destabilizing South America

US Congressman Albin Siris accused Russia of trying to destabilize the situation in South America, including in Colombia.

“As for Venezuela, I am concerned that Russia seems to be increasingly involved in things in Venezuela… they are trying to destabilize the region,” Siris said.

According to him, in 2019, Moscow conducted six thousand people through Colombia. The country is “not exactly a beach destination” for Russia.

Siris stressed that Russia is using Venezuela to undermine the situation in Colombia and interfere in the elections in South America.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken agreed with the congressman.

Earlier, the White House called the priority policy issues of the new US administration.

US and EU sanctions against Venezuela trigger a crisis in the country — UN

The sanctioned position of the republic has a huge impact on all categories of human rights in the country, the organization noted.

The unilateral restrictive measures introduced by the American government and the European Union against Venezuela had a negative impact on the entire population of the republic. This is stated in the report of the UN representative on the negative impact of sanctions on human rights observance Elena Dovgan, published on Friday, February 12.

It is indicated that Dovgan was on a visit to the republic for two weeks. According to her, the sanctions led to “an economic and humanitarian crisis, as well as a development crisis with disastrous consequences for the Venezuelan population.”

The speaker noted that the country lacks “the necessary machinery, spare parts, electricity, water, fuel, gas, food and medicine” and there is a shortage of qualified workers.

“This situation has a huge impact on all categories of human rights, including the right to life, food, health, and development,” Dovgan explained.

In this regard, the UN called for the abolition of restrictions against Caracas, since, the representative of the organization recalled, such restrictive measures are considered legal if introduced in response to or by the decision of the UN Security Council.

We will remind, earlier the President of Venezuela Nicolas Maduro said that state funds of the republic for the purchase of vaccines against coronavirus were frozen as a result of the imposed sanctions.

However, as reported, the administration of the new American leader Joe Biden made the first relaxation of the sanctions regime against Venezuela — it allowed a number of financial transactions for the operation of ports and airports of the republic.

Colombian President: Venezuela needs an urgent change of power

Colombian President Ivan Duque, during his speech in Bogota, advised his colleague, Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, to resign as soon as possible.

“For the time being, Venezuela is to end the dictatorship of Maduro’s team, create space for a transitional government with the participation of all political forces in the country and prepare for free elections,” Duque said.

Venezuela criticized the EU decision to extend sanctions

The European Union continues to support the illegal blockade of the Venezuelan people, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreasa said on November 12 on his Twitter page.

The official added that even in the current circumstances, the EU continues to follow the course prescribed by US President Donald Trump. The Venezuelan foreign minister called the policy “cruel” and “unsuccessful,” adding that it had a flavor of “dissatisfied colonialism.”

Recall that on November 12, the European Union extended the sanctions regime against Venezuela until November 14, 2021. Among other things, these measures include an arms embargo and travel bans, as well as an asset freeze of 36 people holding official positions in the Venezuelan government, whom the Council of the European Union considers responsible for human rights violations and undermining democracy in the country.

Venezuelan officials have repeatedly stressed that the US and European unilateral coercive measures entail human rights violations by limiting the country’s residents’ access to essential resources — food and medicine.
