In Italy, a 10-year-old girl took part in a dangerous TikTok challenge and died. According to The Guardian, Italian prosecutors have launched an investigation into the accidental death of a minor. In this regard, the country’s authorities are blocking the accounts of users of the social network.
The tragedy took place in the capital of the Italian island of Sicily — Palermo. A 10-year-old schoolgirl with a mobile phone in her hands was found in the bathroom by her five-year-old sister. The victim was taken to the hospital, but the doctors were unable to save the girl.
A child suffocated while performing a dangerous TikTok challenge called “blackout,” where participants put a belt around their necks and hold their breath while recording a video.
In this case, the local prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into possible incitement to suicide and is finding out if someone invited her to take part in this challenge.
The girl’s parents said that the child was playing the “eclipse program,” which her sister confessed to them.
“We didn’t know she was taking part in this game. We knew that (our daughter) went to TikTok dancing, watched videos. How could I imagine this atrocity? ”— explained the father of the deceased.
In turn, TikTok said that the company could not find any content that could induce the girl to participate in this challenge.
“The safety of the TikTok community is our absolute priority, and therefore we do not allow any content that encourages or promotes dangerous behavior,” the company said. The social network expressed its readiness to help the authorities in the investigation of possible incitement to suicide.
The US authorities decided not to extend the deadline for the sale of the American segment of the social network TikTok, owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, Reuters reported, citing informed sources.
The deadline for the deal to sell the US segment expires on Friday, December 4.
According to sources, the American side is considering the possibility of continuing negotiations with the Chinese company, but it was decided not to extend the deadline for the sale.
At the moment, the US Department of Justice and Commerce did not respond to a request for confirmation of this information, the White House and the administration of the social network refused to comment on the information, the agency notes.
The United States administration accuses TikTok of the application being able to transfer data from Americans to the PRC authorities. In this regard, US President Donald Trump in August signed the decrees “On Combating the TikTok Threat” and “On Combating the WeChat Threat”, where he gave a month to terminate any transactions with ByteDance in American jurisdictions. After that, the ban was repeatedly extended due to discussions on the purchase of the application by American companies.
The head of the White House National Economic Council said that the deal to sell the network has not been fully agreed upon.
The Chinese company ByteDance, which owns the TikTok service, has asked a US court to temporarily block the ban on downloading the application. This was announced on Wednesday, September 23rd, by Bloomberg.
It is noted that the company has filed a petition to hold court hearings in the case of the American segment before the corresponding ban comes into force.
Recall that the ban on downloading TikTok, which was supposed to come into force on September 20, will take effect on September 27. It was postponed for a week as US President Donald Trump approved the acquisition of the US segment of TikTok by Oracle and Walmart.
However, according to media reports in the United States, the head of the National Economic Council of the White House, Lawrence Kudlow, said that the deal with Oracle and Walmart was not fully agreed upon, its parameters were changing.
Thus, if the mentioned deal is not concluded by November 12, the authorities of the country will begin to restrict the work of TikTok.
The American leader stressed that the deal to sell the application to Oracle and Walmart is still preliminary.
U.S. President Donald Trump said that the most important aspect of the social network TikTok is security, so its disconnection in the country is not excluded. He said this on Monday, September 21, during a meeting with journalists.
In this regard, the head of the White House stressed that the deal to sell the American segment of service to Oracle and Walmart is still preliminary.
“It is under development. I gave my preliminary consent. Two great companies Oracle and Walmart work. If we manage to keep it, we will. If not, we will turn it off,” Trump said.
Recall that earlier, the head of state approved the acquisition of the American segment of TikTok by Oracle Corporation. At the same time, according to him, the social network will keep the name but will have no connections with China.
At the same time, Trump warned that the said transaction will be approved only if the buying companies get full control over the application.
