If the world had responded to the coronavirus pandemic faster and more comprehensively, millions of deaths could have been avoided, according to a report by an expert group.

The report, “COVID-19: make it the last Pandemic,” prepared by the independent commission on pandemic control, chaired by former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, identified “weak links at every point in the chain” of the pandemic response.
They rebuked the World Health Organization for having to declare a global emergency due to COVID-19 not on January 30, 2020, but at a meeting on January 22, and recommend that travel restriction be imposed on people.
Researchers call the pandemic a preventable disaster. The outbreak of infection at the end of 2019 was allowed to develop into a” catastrophic pandemic ” – that is, the death of 3.3 million people from COVID-19 and the decline of the global economy could have been avoided.
The Commission calls last February “lost” because countries did not take drastic measures to stop the spread of the virus.
“The situation we are in today could have been prevented. This is due to a lot of failures, gaps, and delays in preparation and response, ” says Clark.
To prevent another such “toxic cocktail” in the future, the authors of the report call for WHO reform, and for countries to update their national plans to combat the pandemic.
