The Norwegian government on Thursday summoned the U.S. ambassador after reports that the United States spied on its allies using Denmark’s data cables.

The Ambassador was summoned by Prime Minister Erna Solberg.
“I am pleased that the Americans clearly stated that they changed their practices in 2014, which concerned monitoring of allies, and they want to work with us and others to put together a picture of what happened,” Solberg said.
“Today we summoned the US ambassador to Oslo to find out,” she added.
Solberg also spoke with her Danish counterpart Mette Frederiksen on Thursday.
“I repeated to her that we consider spying against close friends and allies unacceptable and unnecessary,” Solberg said.
Last week, Danmarks Radio reported that the US National Security Agency used cooperation with Denmark’s intelligence unit to track high-ranking officials in Germany, Sweden, Norway, and France between 2012 and 2014.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron have previously said that they consider it unacceptable to monitor allies after reports of espionage by Denmark and the United States.
