Merkel asked Putin to influence the Taliban to help with evacuation

German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked Russian President to use his influence in negotiations with the Taliban to help Germany evacuate Afghan workers from Kabul.

Merkel said this in Moscow at a joint press conference with the Russian president.

Merkel said she was disappointed by the Taliban taking control in Afghanistan, but called the situation a reality.

“I pro-inform that from the German point of view, the priority now is to help people who have been working with Germany, with NATO, for 20 years to give Afghan citizens a safe haven in Germany,” the chancellor said.

She said she wants as many of these people as possible to be taken to Germany in the coming days.

“I asked the Russian president that point out in negotiations with the Taliban that cooperation on humanitarian issues with the Taliban, with UN organizations in Afghanistan, would be better if these people could leave the country,” Angela Merkel said.

As reported, a German citizen was shot on his way to the airport in Kabul to evacuate.
