Latvian MP arrested on suspicion of spying for Russia

The court of the Vidzeme suburb of Riga has arrested a member of the Latvian Seimas, Janis Adamsons, on suspicion of spying for Russia.

The meeting lasted about two hours. The politician was escorted into and out of the courtroom by State Security officers. Adamson and his lawyer declined to comment. The decision can be challenged in the Riga District Court within seven days.

On June 10, the Latvian Seimas almost unanimously supported the search and detention of the deputy. The Prosecutor General’s Office requested that his parliamentary immunity be revoked. According to her, Adamson may be involved in the transfer of classified information to Russia.

The deputy himself does not admit his guilt. He called the criminal case “a counterattack of mafia structures.”
