In Latvia, the faction of the National Association, which is part of the governing coalition, proposed to introduce a state of emergency in the regions bordering on Belarus.
This was discussed at a meeting between France and Latvian Interior Minister Maria Golubeva, reports the Delfi portal.
Today the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs discussed the situation on the Latvian-Belarusian border with the Seimas from the National Association. Namely, what Latvia needs to do so that illegal migrants do not go from Belarus to the country the way it is now happening on the border with Lithuania.
According to the National Association, during the meeting, it was possible to reach an agreement on the need to declare a state of emergency in the border region. Also, stressed that it is necessary to build a wall on the border as soon as possible. The implementation of this project was delayed, but now, according to politicians, the wall can become a real obstacle to the penetration of migrants. To speed up the construction process, regulatory barriers need to be removed. Also, at the meeting, it was discussed that it is necessary to amend the Criminal Code, increasing the punishment for organizers and participants in human smuggling.
The chairman of the parliamentary faction of the National Association, Janis Dombrava, noted that during the meeting it was possible to reach an understanding that this is not about classical refugees seeking asylum in Latvia.
Politicians assess what is happening on the border with Belarus as a hybrid threat.
As reported, the National Armed Forces of Latvia have sent militias to the country’s eastern border since 12 July to strengthen measures to curb illegal immigration.
