The European Union invited the United States to express unity in its approach to Russia and “oppose Russia’s suppression of civil society, the opposition, and independent media.” This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to the draft joint statement for the summit sent by the EU to the White House.
“We are united in our principled approach to Russia and we will respond decisively to the repeated pattern of its negative behavior and malicious actions,” the document says.
The EU-US summit will be held in Brussels on June 15-a a day before the planned meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin and his American counterpart Joe Biden. This will be Biden’s first trip to Europe as US president. The European Union and the United States are expected to agree on closer economic cooperation, as well as a unified approach to China.
