UN thanks Putin for offering vaccine against coronavirus

The United Nations (UN) has thanked Russian President Vladimir Putin for the offer to provide its employees with the coronavirus vaccine.

The UN called the Russian head’s proposal generous and promised that the organization’s medical service would study it.

During his speech at the UN General Assembly session, Vladimir Putin offered the organization’s employees a Russian vaccine against coronavirus free of charge. “We are receiving such appeals from colleagues from the UN, and we will not remain indifferent to them,” the Russian head said.

The 75th session of the UN General Assembly opened on September 15 in New York. In connection with the coronavirus pandemic, its participants could not meet in person but recorded a video message from their countries.

On August 11, Vladimir Putin announced the registration of the world’s first coronavirus vaccine produced in Russia. The drug was named “Sputnik V”. Its production started on 15 August. The first will be vaccinated by doctors and citizens from risk groups, and later will begin mass vaccination of Russians. In parallel with post-marketing trials of this drug, clinical trials of another Russian vaccine developed by the Vector Center are also underway.

Trump at the UN called for China to be punished for the coronavirus

The American president has many times laid the blame for the spread of coronavirus in the world on China. Now he did it at the UN General Assembly.

U.S. President Donald Trump during his speech at the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, September 22, once again called for China to be held responsible for the emergence of a coronavirus pandemic.

The head of the White House blames China for the fact that in the early stages of the spread of Beijing has not banned international flights from its territory, thus allowing “infecting the world.

In addition to China, Trump was criticized by the World Health Organization.

“We will distribute the vaccine, defeat the virus, end the pandemic and usher in a new era of unprecedented prosperity, cooperation, and peace,” Trump said.

China has already responded to the allegations, calling them groundless.

Trump, however, urged the UN to focus on “real-world problems”.

“For the UN to be an effective organization, it must focus on real-world problems. These include terrorism, harassment of women, forced labor, drug trafficking, human trafficking, including for sexual exploitation, religious persecution, and ethnic cleansing of religious minorities,” he said.

Trump recalled the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan as well as participation in Middle East peace agreements.

“After decades of lack of progress, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain signed a historic White House peace agreement,” the U.S. president recalled when he announced several other agreements.

In addition, the U.S. leader also said that the United States “breathed new life” into NATO.

Recall that the outbreak of a new coronavirus was recorded in late 2019 in China. Later it spread to most countries. The World Health Organization declared it a pandemic on March 11.

Trump has repeatedly stated that he has increasing anger against China because of the spread of coronavirus around the world, as the pandemic has caused enormous damage to the United States.

Trump has also repeatedly called COVID-19 the “Chinese virus” or ‘Wuhan virus”.

Indian Prime Minister called for UN reform

The United Nations needs reforms, without which it is impossible to confront the challenges of our time. This was stated by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking at the solemn meeting of the UN General Assembly (GA) on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the organization.

“We cannot fight the challenges of today with outdated structures. Without comprehensive reforms, the UN is facing a crisis of confidence. For today’s interconnected world, we need a reformed multilateral approach that reflects today’s realities, gives voice to all stakeholders, addresses contemporary problems, and focuses attention on human well-being, “said the Indian Prime Minister.

Modi noted that, as reflected in the adopted Declaration of the UN General Assembly, member countries still need to do work to prevent conflicts, ensure universal development, solve climate change problems, reduce inequality, and effectively use digital technologies. The need to reform the United Nations itself is also recognized. “India is ready to cooperate with all countries in this direction,” Narendra Modi said.

European countries did not support the United States on sanctions against Iran

Washington withdrew from the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program, so its decisions to renew sanctions have no legal force, according to Berlin, Paris, and London.

Germany, France, and Britain have rejected a US proposal to renew sanctions against Iran after September 20. This is stated in the letter of the permanent representatives of these countries to the UN, addressed to the UN Security Council.

As noted, three European countries – Great Britain, France, and Germany (the so-called Euro tree) – contrary to the position of the United States, refused to renew sanctions against Tehran, which were lifted after the signing of an agreement on the Iranian nuclear program in 2015.

The letter states that any decisions or actions by the United States aimed at activating the mechanism to restore UN sanctions against Iran will not have legal force due to Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement on Iran’s nuclear program.

The mechanism for restoring sanctions was laid down in UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which ratified the nuclear agreement with Iran signed in 2015. According to this clause, in case of non-fulfillment of the terms of the agreement, any of its participants can demand the restoration of penal measures, and other parties cannot veto this demand.

However, due to the unilateral US withdrawal from the agreement in 2018, the Euro tree believes that Washington no longer has the legal ability to demand the restoration of UN sanctions against Tehran.

The White House is convinced that formally Washington has the right to use this mechanism since it participated in the signing of the resolution.

It is not yet clear how the United States will be able to launch this mechanism if the majority of countries in the UN Security Council do not support Washington on this issue.

Earlier, the United States announced the restoration of UN sanctions against Iran. Washington also threatened Tehran’s nuclear supporters with measures.
