The UN Security Council called for the Taliban fighters who violate human rights and international humanitarian law to be brought to justice. This was said in a press release of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ statement, published on the website of the Security Council.
“The members of the Security Council have expressed deep concern over the number of reports of serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights abuses in communities affected by … conflict,” the document said.
It is noted that all parties must comply with obligations under international humanitarian law, protect civilians, as well as ensure the safety of humanitarian and medical personnel, interpreters, and members of the press and diplomatic missions.
Earlier, on August 16, the UN Security Council called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the formation of a new government in Afghanistan. Diplomats demanded that the new government be established through inclusive negotiations and that dialogue be established as soon as possible to resolve the power crisis.
