In Zhengzhou, the administrative center of the Chinese province of Henan, the evacuation of the subway flooded as a result of the strongest flooding has ended, China Central Television reports, citing the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the People’s Republic of China.
“Heavy rains led to the fact that on July 20, a large amount of water accumulated in the tunnel on the fifth line of the Zhengzhou metro, train traffic was stopped, passengers were locked in cars,” the ministry said in a statement.
To save the trapped passengers, rescuers cut a passage in the roof of the car.
“The passengers were safely evacuated,” the rescuers said, adding that more than 500 people were evacuated from the fifth branch of the Zhengzhou metro.
As a result of the flood, 12 people were killed, five more people were injured of varying severity.
Earlier, flooding in the Chinese province of Henan destroyed the dam of the reservoir.
The population of Zhengzhou city is over 10 million people. More than 100 thousand people were evacuated from Henan Province. In China, the level of national emergency response was also raised from the third to the second.
