European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed surprise that Russia is offering a number of countries the Sputnik V vaccine at a time when the country itself is not moving too fast with vaccination.
She said this at a briefing after a meeting of the board of European commissioners in Brussels.
According to von der Leyen, the manufacturers of the Russian vaccine have not yet applied for permission to access the market.
“If they do that, they have to file a full list of data, pass a full test, just like any other vaccine,” she said.
The President of the European Commission added that the Russians do not have production in Europe, so we should expect an inspection at the site of production in Russia.
She also expressed surprise that the Russian Federation offers its vaccine to a number of countries when its own population is not vaccinated.
“I wonder why Russia theoretically offers millions and millions of doses at a time when it itself has insufficient progress in vaccinating its own people. This is also a question that needs to be answered, “ von der Leyen said.
Earlier, Prime Minister of Lithuania Ingrida Simonyte said that Russia is using the vaccine “Sputnik V” as a hybrid weapon.
“They say Sputnik V is good, but Putin doesn’t want to use it as a medicine for the Russian people — he offers it to the world as another hybrid weapon to embody the principle of ‘divide and rule’,” she said.
