The EU demanded an explanation from the U.S. because of the loss of France’s contract for submarines

The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that the EU demanded an explanation from the United States because of the loss of France’s contract for the supply of submarines after the creation of the defense partnership of the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom (AUKUS). He told reporters about this.

According to him, these actions show “a lack of loyalty on the part of the United States” towards the European Union.

Earlier it became known that the United Kingdom, the United States, and Australia signed an agreement on cooperation in the field of defense and security (AUKUS), which involves the creation of nuclear submarines for the Australian Navy in 18 months. Their construction is planned in Adelaide, Australia.

Thus, Australia has terminated the contract concluded in 2017 with the French company Naval Group for the supply of Barracuda submarines. Paris was supposed to supply Canberra with 12 attack submarines, the contract was estimated at $50 billion.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called Australia’s decision to terminate the contract for the construction of submarines “a stab in the back.”
