The new MacBook Pro on Apple M1 SoC impressive…

GPU in Apple M1 doesn’t have its own dedicated memory

Almost all of the test results of the SoC Apple M1, which underlies the new MacBook and Mac mini, have been carried out in various benchmarks to date, most of them in synthetic Geekbench. It’s better than nothing, but real application performance is more important.

And according to the results that have appeared on the web, the Apple M1 is indeed very impressive. The source claims Final Cut Pro X on the new MacBook Pro is faster than the 2019 iMac Pro. In particular, the export of some 10-bit videos with the H.264 codec took 10 minutes 20 seconds and 11 minutes 30 seconds on test PCs, respectively. And this despite the fact that the iMac Pro was equipped with a productive discrete graphics card Radeon Pro Vega 56 with 8 GB of its own memory.

Moreover, when exporting 10-bit video with the H.265 codec, the new MacBook Pro outperformed its brother even more: 45 seconds versus 80 seconds. Considering that the new MacBook Pro is based on a single-chip system, whose GPU does not have its own dedicated video memory, the results are very impressive indeed.

The smartphone is already being tested in production

More details continue to emerge about the progress of the development of the first iPhone with a foldable screen. A Chinese source confirms that Apple has begun shipping foldable iPhones to assembly partner Foxconn for testing. This morning we had incomplete information on this matter.

Citing sources in the supply chain, the Economic Daily News reports that testing should help determine the use of OLED or Micro-LED displays, as the choice of screen technology could affect subsequent assembly methods.

It is also reported that Apple has instructed Foxconn to test the device, or rather its flexible screen and hinge, for durability using more than 100,000 open and close tests. The source adds that similar tests for conventional laptops require 20,000 to 30,000 open and close.

Earlier it was reported that Apple is working on a foldable iPhone prototype that has two separate displays. When unfolded, they are closely adjacent to each other without gaps and frames. However, what will be the bending iPhone in the end, no one can yet say for sure.

The first rumors that Apple was working on a foldable iPhone appeared back in 2016, so Apple may well have made significant progress. And since the company is usually in no rush and the fact that flexible smartphones have been on the market for over a year, it is likely that the foldable iPhone will arrive in 2021 or 2022.

The USA launched a secret satellite

The US military-space intelligence satellite NROL-101 was launched into orbit by the Atlas V launch vehicle.

United Launch Alliance on the night of Saturday, November 14, launched a heavy launch vehicle Atlas V from Cape Canaveral with the secret NROL-101 satellite of the US National Space Intelligence Agency, the press service of the company said.

About the goals, orbit, size, and other characteristics of the satellite, the cost of which is estimated at a billion dollars. Not reported.

The mission and capabilities of this type of satellites are classified.

The heavy NROL-101 spacecraft, which weighs up to six tons, is reportedly an electronic reconnaissance satellite.

As a reminder, last week China launched the world’s first 6G test satellite.

And before that, a new private launch vehicle CERES-1, intended for commercial use, made its maiden flight in China. She delivered one satellite to a given orbit.

The first crew of tourists for the SpaceX flight to the ISS is formed

The first space tourists who will travel to the International Space Station (ISS) on the Crew Dragon of entrepreneur Elon Musk’s corporation SpaceX have signed a contract. This was reported by the American firm Axiom Space on a Twitter account.

The international crew will consist of three private astronauts and the commander, NASA Explorer Astronaut Michael Lopez-Alegria. “In other words, the first-ever private crew has been formed to go into orbit,” the entry says. The first flight will take place no earlier than the end of 2021.

In March, Axiom Space agreed with SpaceX to deliver three space tourists to the ISS. It is assumed that the duration of such a tour will be 10 days: two days of flight and eight days of rest at the station.

In July, Space Adventures revealed that the space tourist’s spacewalk will take place in 2023 and will last about 90-100 minutes. This corresponds to one orbit of the ISS around the Earth. Two tourists will go to the ISS on the Soyuz MS spacecraft. One of them, together with a professional Russian cosmonaut, will enter open space from the Russian segment of the ISS.

Apple unveils its own M1 processor

The American company Apple introduced its own processor for computers and laptops on Tuesday. The broadcast was conducted on the company’s website.

The processor was named M1. As stated in the presentation, the M1 is “the first chip designed specifically for the Mac.” “It’s an amazingly functional chip,” said a company spokesman.

Apple in June announced plans to release computers and laptops with its own processors. CEO Tim Cook called it “a historic moment for the company.” Before that, Apple computers and laptops had used Intel processors for about 15 years. Apple uses its own chips in iPhones and iPads.
