UK house price growth in March was the highest in 6 months

According to data published by the British bank Halifax, in March of this year, the UK experienced the fastest growth in residential property prices in the last 6 months.

The growth of the indicator was facilitated by the extension of the British government’s tax incentives for acquisitions during the period of overcoming the negative consequences of the crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The cost of British housing increased in March this year by 1.1% compared to the previous month, while compared to the same month in 2020, residential real estate in the country rose by 6.5%. The Halifax report showed that the average house price in the British property market rose last month to 254,606 pounds.

After the easing of restrictions to contain the pandemic last year, the British housing market saw a sharp increase in inactivity. The March recovery in the market was made possible by the Treasury’s extension of the stamp duty holiday, and Halifax experts expect the increased level of activity to continue in the future.

Hungary will help Slovakia with the expertise of Sputnik V

This was announced by the head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry after a meeting in Budapest with the Slovak Deputy Prime Minister. Earlier, the Slovak regulator said that their vaccine doses do not match the samples that were considered by the European regulator and The Lancet magazine. RDIF refutes this information.

Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister Igor Matovic asked Hungary to conduct an expert examination of the Sputnik V vaccine, as Bratislava does not have the necessary laboratories. Budapest agreed to help. Earlier, there were publications in the media, according to which the batch of Russian vaccine delivered to Slovakia differs from the one described in The Lancet magazine. The Russian Direct Investment Fund called this information fake and demanded that Bratislava return the drug.

Hungary became the first country in the European Union, which, without waiting for the decision of the European regulator, allowed the use of “Sputnik V”. The Russian vaccine has been inoculated there since February. Slovakia, also a member of the European Union, decided to follow the example of Hungary, but this led to a political crisis and the resignation of Igor Matovic as prime minister-although he remained in the government.

A new scandal broke out when the Slovak media reported that the Slovak State Institute for Drug Control was unable to conduct a full audit of Sputnik due to the fact that it was not provided with the necessary amount of data. In addition, the vaccine delivered to the country is different from the one that is known from publications in scientific publications. In the media, there was unofficial information about two forms of the drug — liquid and dry, with different storage conditions.

The RDIF responded to all this. The Foundation has asked the Slovak government to return the coronavirus vaccine so that it can be used in other countries.

Interpol rescued about 500 victims of human trafficking

As part of the operation, almost 200 attackers were detained. 24 countries participated in the special operation.

During the operation of the Century, provided by Interpol, about 500 victims of human trafficking, including children, were rescued. This was reported by Interpol on Friday, April 9.

“Operation Century, which means Stop in Swahili, was conducted from March 28 to April 2<…> and led to the detention of 195 people, of whom 88 [were detained] on charges of human trafficking, and another 63 — of illegal transportation of people. The remaining arrests were made on other charges, such as forgery, theft, drug-related crimes, and environmental crimes, “ the report said.

The operation involved 24 countries: Algeria, Angola, Benin, Brazil, Cape Verde, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, France, Greece, Kenya, Lebanon, Libya, Malawi, Morocco, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, South Africa, South Sudan, Spain, Sudan, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe.

“Operation Century has once again demonstrated how closely related migrant smuggling and human trafficking are, especially in the context of a global health crisis, when the most vulnerable people are desperate to avoid difficulties, and criminal networks are simply seeking to make a profit,” Interpol added.

Russia is the main obstacle to peace in Belarus

The leader of the Belarusian opposition, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, is ready to hold talks with the self-proclaimed President of Belarus, Alexander Lukashenko, without any preconditions.

This is stated in a statement by her office.

In particular, it is claimed that Tikhanovskaya is ready to meet not even with Lukashenko himself, but with his representatives.

But due to the lack of trust between the parties, the oppositionists believe that the OSCE can act as a platform for preliminary consultations and contacts.

“This allows us to include Russia in the process. It is Russia’s position that is the main obstacle to resolving the crisis in Belarus, “ Tikhanovskaya said unexpectedly.

At the same time, the OSCE will not be able to act as a guarantor of the party’s fulfillment of their obligations. In addition to the Russian Federation, the United States, France, Germany, Switzerland, Finland, or Sweden may be involved in the negotiations for this purpose.

However, neither Poland nor Lithuania, with which the Lukashenko regime is in acute conflict, can mediate the reconciliation of Belarusians.

Recall that at home, several criminal cases were opened against Tikhanovskaya — including an attempt to seize power and prepare a terrorist attack.

In this regard, Belarus demanded to extradite the politician from Lithuania but was decisively refused.

What are the chances of the EU’s New Green Deal?

According to the plans of the European Commission, the package of measures taken to overcome the coronavirus crisis should be based on a New Green Deal. At the same time, Brussels is betting on an initiative called the “New European Bauhaus”. The aim of the project is to promote such principles and values as quality design, environmental sustainability, barrier-free operation, and investment. Meanwhile, negotiations on a new climate law due to be passed this spring have stalled. Observers are concerned about how the situation is developing.

Don’t miss at least this train

The European Union has a unique chance to catch up on the world stage, “ writes El Pais:

“In the digital race, the 27 EU countries have long been behind the US and China, but in the green race, they may well give others a head start. Eight of the ten most important companies in the field of clean energy are European. Europe must not miss this train! At stake are energy independence, the creation of many jobs, and control over technology of global significance. In addition, leadership in the field of green technologies can help the EU strengthen its image of moral authority, and this is worth a lot. Authority is imperceptible physically, but its significance is extremely great.”

Poland needs a change of course

Poland should switch from coal to renewable energy sources as soon as possible, — Rzeczpospolita insists:

“We are heading for a collision course, but we still have time for rescue maneuvers. If we miss this opportunity, we face an economic catastrophe. Rising energy prices will lead to the ruin of Polish companies and enterprises, which have already suffered from numerous lockdowns. Therefore, the economic recovery plan and the implementation of the New Green Deal in Poland should focus on green technologies. Otherwise, the Polish economy is unlikely to benefit significantly from the funds allocated by the European Union. After all, those who rely on alternative energy sources will receive the most funding.”

Results can only be achieved together

The new Green Deal should cover all EU countries, warns Rzeczpospolita:

“The idea of Ursula von der Leyen should not be limited to a group of selected countries — or a certain ‘elite’. Walter Gropius, the ideologues of the Bauhaus, said that his school should serve people — and be universal. And why this dream is not feasible if someone is deliberately excluded from it. The new Bauhaus should be built jointly by all EU countries. Including Poland, a European country with a viable industry and crafts.”

The course leading to a collision with the United States

EU plans will not strengthen relations with the US, warns The Spectator:

“President Joe Biden’s program idea is to promote green energy, focused on the production of renewable and clean electricity. … The EU has almost the same agenda: most of the fund for economic recovery from the consequences of the corona crisis in the amount of 750 billion euros is planned to be directed to this area. However, there cannot be two global leaders in the field of green energy! Competition for leadership in this area is likely to further alienate the parties from each other.”
