Canada receives the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine under the COVAX program

Canada has received the first batch of new types of coronavirus vaccines under the international COVAX mechanism. This is reported by the CBC.

General Denis Fortini, who is responsible for sorting and distributing CAVID-19 vaccines, said that a total of 317,000 doses of the Anglo-Swedish drug AstraZeneca were delivered to the country.

According to him, the received batch was produced at an enterprise in South Korea. At the same time, he added that Canada should still receive 1.6 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine by the end of June.

In total, more than 10.2 million doses of COVID-19 drugs were delivered to Canada during the pandemic.

On December 31, 2019, the Chinese authorities announced an outbreak of pneumonia in the city of Wuhan. The causative agent of the disease is a new type of coronavirus, which has been officially named COVID-19. On March 11, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak of the new coronavirus a pandemic.

In England, one of the richest Britons was killed

One of the wealthiest men in the UK, 83-year-old hotel owner Richard Sutton was killed on the grounds of his estate in the southwest of England.

This is reported by The Times.

The attack was reportedly carried out on the evening of 7 April at his home near the town of Gillingham in Dorset.

Police, who arrived at the scene after a call from a neighbor, found Sutton with a knife wound.

A 60-year-old woman, presumably the wife of an entrepreneur, was also stabbed. She was taken by helicopter to Bristol Hospital and is in critical condition.

Police arrested a 34-year-old man from Gillingham who was known to the victim in connection with the attack.

The police immediately established that the suspect in the murder had left the estate in the direction of London. His car was tracked for almost 200 km and the man was detained in the British capital.

The suspect in the murder was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

The motive for the murder is still unknown, and an investigation has been launched.

Richard Sutton, with a fortune of 301 million pounds ($415 million), was ranked 435th in the list of the richest people in the UK, which is traditionally published by the Sunday Times newspaper. He owned several hotels.

Recall that in December 2017, billionaire and founder of the pharmaceutical corporation Apotex Barry Sherman and his wife Honey were found dead in Canada. The couple was found in their own home in Toronto.

Prince Harry gets a second job in the USA

Prince Harry, who gave up his royal duties with his wife Meghan Markle last year, became a member of the commission on combating misinformation at the Aspen Institute of America. This is reported on the website of the institution.

“The three co-chairs will be joined by 15 members of the commission from across the political spectrum, including Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, co-founder of [a non-profit organization] Archewell,” the statement said.

The Aspen Institute is an international non-profit organization dedicated to humanitarian research. A message posted on the institute’s website says that the commission, which included Harry, “will fight the influence and problem of disinformation in all aspects of modern society.”

On March 23, The Wall Street Journal reported that Prince Harry took a senior position in one of the Silicon Valley startups — the company BetterUp. In particular, he intends to engage in coaching.

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan announced their renunciation of royal powers and their departure from the royal family last winter. Together with his wife, he moved first to Canada, and then to the United States. In October 2020, the couple founded the Archewell Foundation.

Sanctions against China were imposed by the US, Canada, and Britain

Restrictive measures have been introduced against top officials of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China.

Following the European Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada imposed sanctions against Chinese officials for violating the rights of Uighurs in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

So, London imposed sanctions on four Chinese officials and one organization. The restrictions included Chen Mingguo, head of the Xinjiang Public Security Department, Wang Mingshan, a member of the party committee, head of the political and legal commission of the region, Wang Junzheng, deputy secretary of the Party Committee of Xinjiang, and Zhu Hailun, deputy chairman of the Standing Committee of the People’s Congress. The sanctions also apply to the Xinjiang Industrial and Construction Building.

Similar sanctions were imposed by Canada, and two Chinese officials were blacklisted by the United States.

“Today’s actions of the Ministry of Finance complement the steps taken also by the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Canada, which have imposed sanctions against these and other individuals,” the US Treasury Department said.

The US sanctions were imposed as part of the Magnitsky Global Human Rights Act.

The sanctions imposed provide for the blocking of all property or property rights of persons included in the list on the territory of the named countries. Also, individuals and legal entities of the United States are prohibited from entering into any transactions with the persons involved in the list.

As reported, in response to the EU sanctions, China will impose restrictive measures against 10 people and four legal entities.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrel called China’s decision unacceptable. “These measures are regrettable and unacceptable. The European Union will not change its commitment to protecting human rights, “ he said.

As you know, the Chinese authorities are accused of reprisals against the Uighurs in Xinjiang. In January, the United States became the first country to call China’s actions against the Uighurs genocide. Beijing denies all the charges.

Biden will “give” China $60 billion

US President Joe Biden’s program to stimulate the US economy will also provide significant support to the country’s trading partners. China will benefit most from it. This is the conclusion reached by the international insurance company Euler Hermes.

Total spending under the program is expected to reach $1.9 trillion over the next two years. In particular, experts expect that 360 billion will eventually go to increase imports of goods and services since the US manufacturing sector will not have time to meet the sharply increased demand.

Of these, 60 billion will be a “gift” for China. After him, Mexico will benefit the most-plus $45 billion in exports. Germany will receive an additional $22 billion, and the United Kingdom — $16 billion.

If you look at the growth in export revenues relative to GDP, then the Biden initiative will benefit most from Mexico (plus 1.7 percent of GDP), Vietnam (1.4 percent), and Ireland (1.3 percent). Before the stimulus program, China’s export growth to the United States was estimated at $115 billion in two years, and with it — $175 billion. Mexico has 87 and 132 billion, while Canada has 73 and 121 billion.

By sector, the manufacturers of household appliances (an increase of $32 billion), computers and telecommunications equipment ($30 billion), and the automotive sector ($30 billion) will feel the best.

The company estimates that the US trade deficit will grow to 4.5 percent of the country’s GDP in 2021 and 2022, although in the past five years it was about 2.9 percent. An additional reason for this assessment was the revision of GDP growth.

Euler Hermes estimates that the U.S. economy will grow by 5.3 percent in 2021 and 3.8 percent in 2022. Back in December, growth was expected to be only 3.6 and 3.1 percent, respectively. This change means that households will start spending the savings accumulated during the crisis faster. At the same time, the estimate looks quite modest — Goldman Sachs expects GDP growth of eight percent at once.
