Vietnam plans to open the resort island of Phu Quoc for tourists in October. The government made a corresponding statement on Thursday, September 9, according to Reuters.
The island, located 10 km off the coast of Cambodia, will open for a trial period of six months. These measures were taken in an attempt to support the country’s economy.
“The ongoing pandemic has seriously hit the tourism industry,” explained Vietnam’s Minister of Culture and Tourism, Nguyen Van Han.
Fully vaccinated tourists with a negative test for coronavirus will be able to get to the island. They can arrive both on regular and charter flights.
In 2019, 18 million tourists visited Vietnam — they brought $31 billion to the economy. In 2020, their number collapsed to 3.8 million people.
Currently, the country is closed to entry for everyone except returning citizens and entrepreneurs investing in the economy.
