In Africa, a new strain of coronavirus has been discovered, which can contain up to 40 mutations.
This was stated by the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, John Nkengasong, who reports DW.
According to him, the first case of infection with a new type of infection was recorded in citizens of Tanzania who came to Angola. Now scientists from South Africa are conducting a study of the strain, but the first results “already give cause for concern.”
Nkengasong stressed that there is no data on the effectiveness of vaccines against this mutation yet. Moreover, since the middle of last year, Tanzania has not provided information on the incidence in the country.
“It is slowly moving towards the third wave,” the expert added.
Earlier, epidemiologists said that the world will need new COVID-vaccines within a year due to the spread of new strains of infection.
