German Chancellor Angela Merkel called on UEFA on Tuesday to act responsibly in hosting the final of the Euro 2020 soccer tournament in London over concerns about the spread of the coronavirus in England.
This is reported by Reuters.
“I hope that UEFA will take responsibility for the matches at the Euro. I would not like to see crowded stadiums there, and I support all the efforts made by the British government to ensure the necessary hygiene measures, “ Merkel said.
She spoke at a joint press conference with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who said the spread of the “Delta” option in the EU was worrying.
On Monday, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi called for the match to be moved from England due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases, but European football’s governing body UEFA said it had no plans to replace Wembley Stadium as the host for the semi-finals and final.
Britain has seen a surge in cases due to the spread of the more contagious variant “Delta”, which was first detected in India.
