Lithuania and Poland recall ambassadors from Belarus

The decision was made after consultations with other EU representatives

Lithuania and Poland are recalling their ambassadors to Belarus for consultations in connection with the demand of the Belarusian authorities to reduce the number of employees of their embassies.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.

The decision was made after a series of consultations with other EU representatives — EU High Representative Josep Borrell, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau, and German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas.

“Our goal is to preserve diplomatic contacts as much as possible. We also sent a signal to the Belarusian side, with which we have so far agreed that a temporary invitation of ambassadors for consultations will serve to reduce tensions and help preserve diplomatic representation at the level of ambassadors. Together with the Poles, we have already made a decision to recall the ambassadors from Minsk for consultations, “said the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Linas Linkevicius.

According to the minister, if Belarus continues to insist on reducing the staff of embassies, mirror measures will be taken.
