Italy’s lower house of parliament expresses confidence in Conte’s government

Deputies in Italy’s lower house of parliament have expressed confidence in the government of Giuseppe Conte, with 321 votes in favor and 259 against. 27 deputies abstained. These figures are given on the website of the lower house, where the voting process was broadcast live.

Conte’s government was on the verge of resignation due to the withdrawal from the ruling majority of former Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s small Living Italy party. This required a test of the support of the parliamentary majority. On Tuesday, the procedure will be repeated in the upper house, the Senate, where gaining majority support is not guaranteed.
