Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the restoration of relations with Morocco a historic event.
Morocco and Israel have agreed to normalize diplomatic relations, US President Donald Trump said on his Twitter page on December 10. He called it a significant breakthrough in efforts to achieve peace in the Middle East.
Trump noted that he signed a declaration recognizing the United States of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara.
“A serious, convincing and realistic Moroccan autonomy proposal is the only basis for a just and lasting solution to peace and prosperity,” the American leader writes.
Trump said in a statement on the White House website that the United States will encourage economic and social development in relations with Morocco, including Western Sahara. To this end, Washington intends to open an American consulate in the city of Dakhla in Western Sahara.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the restoration of relations with Morocco a historic event.
“The light of the world has never shone brighter in the Middle East than it is today,” he said during a candlelight ceremony for Hanukkah. He thanked Trump for mediating in establishing relations between the two states.
Netanyahu announced the opening of direct flights between Israel and Morocco. In addition, so-called “liaison offices” will be set up in both countries.
