The candidate for chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany from the conservative bloc, Armin Laschet, said that when launching the Nord Stream 2, a condition should be put on the non-use of the gas pipeline for geopolitical purposes. The politician announced his proposal at a podium discussion organized by the newspaper Stuttgart Zeitung.
Laschet again called the gas pipeline project economic, specifying that it should not “dehydrate” Ukraine.
This was agreed upon. The Federal Chancellor has guaranteed this, the German politician said.
He added that if geopolitical issues are taken into account, then “it does not matter politically” whether Russian gas is transported by land or by sea. According to Laschet, Ukraine should not worry, because in the coming years Europe will need more gas, where the Netherlands no longer produces gas, and the Norwegians are reducing its production.
Gas from the Arab region is no better from the point of view of human rights. The Germans can no longer increase gas production — a small production operates in Lower Saxony, otherwise, they will have to engage in fracking. We need to make a decision, so Nord Stream 2 is a project to which I say yes. I do not forbid it, “ the politician stressed.
