In Germany, the birth rate record after a year of lockdowns

In March, almost 66 thousand children were born — a record figure for the last 20 years, the State Statistics Service estimated.

In Germany, in March 2021, the birth rate reached a record high for the last 20 years — almost 66 thousand children were born in a month. This was stated in the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, DW reports on Thursday, June 17.

Previously, the number of newborns exceeded the mark of 65 thousand in March 1998.

The ministry explained the situation by easing restrictions after the first  in in May last year. The increase in the birth rate was already outlined in February 2021. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, the indicators remained unchanged compared to 2020, which suggests that the lockdown itself did not cause a baby boom.

At the moment, the state department has published only preliminary figures. The updated data will be released in July.

Recall that in 2019, the recorded the lowest birth rate in almost 60 years. On average, there are 1.53 children per woman in the EU countries. This ratio is highest in and lowest in Malta.
