In Germany, in March 2021, the birth rate reached a record high for the last 20 years — almost 66 thousand children were born in a month. This was stated in the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, DW reports on Thursday, June 17.
Previously, the number of newborns exceeded the mark of 65 thousand in March 1998.
The ministry explained the situation by easing restrictions after the first lockdown in Germany in May last year. The increase in the birth rate was already outlined in February 2021. At the same time, at the beginning of the year, the indicators remained unchanged compared to 2020, which suggests that the lockdown itself did not cause a baby boom.
At the moment, the state department has published only preliminary figures. The updated data will be released in July.
