The UN Security Council adopted a resolution that recommended the General Assembly to leave the current Secretary-General in office.
The UN Security Council has recommended extending the powers of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for another term. The adoption of the relevant resolution was announced on Tuesday, June 8, by the current Chairman of the Security Council, Permanent Representative of Estonia Sven Jurgenson.
“The UN Security Council recommended that the UN General Assembly approve Antonio Guterres as UN Secretary-General for a second term from January 1, 2022, to December 31, 2026,” he said.
Jurgenson also announced that the General Assembly’s vote on Guterres ‘ candidacy will tentatively take place on the morning of June 18.
As you know, the same person can lead the UN an unlimited number of times, but so far no one has held the post for more than a decade. At the same time, the authority to approve the UN Secretary-General lies with the General Assembly, and it usually approves the candidate recommended by the Security Council without a formal vote.
As reported, Antonio Guterres announced his intention to run for a second term in January this year. His decision was one of the first to be supported by British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
