The coronavirus can mutate after plasma transfusions to patients. This is reported by Bloomberg with reference to a study by scientists from the UK.
As experts found out, due to the treatment of those infected with plasma, the coronavirus can change. Because of this, it becomes less susceptible to the antibodies of the immune system.
British doctors treated a cancer patient for more than three months. Doctors tracked how the coronavirus mutated in his body. After plasma treatment, the virus changed significantly, including in the key “spike protein” that infects healthy cells.
In addition, the researchers found that the virus mutates in patients with weakened immune systems and chronic infections.
“When a virus has the ability to stay in the human body for a long time and multiply, it learns to fight the immune system,” Ravindra Gupta, professor of clinical microbiology at the Cambridge Institute of Therapeutic Immunology and Infectious Diseases, is quoted as saying.
According to him, the plasma did not harm the patient, but it did not bring a positive effect.
