The European Commission has confirmed that it has filed a lawsuit against AstraZeneca for breach of contract for the supply of vaccines to the EU. This was reported by a representative of the European Commission, Stefan De Keersmaeker.
The lawsuit based on a breach of an agreement to preorder the drug was filed Friday, April 23.
“Certain provisions of the contract have not been respected and the company has failed to provide a credible strategy to restore supplies on time,” the EC spokesman said.
He said the European Union needs quick deliveries of large quantities of doses, so the European Commission filed this lawsuit on its own behalf and on behalf of the 27 EU countries.
Earlier, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, threatened AstraZeneca with a ban on exports of vaccines against coronavirus from the EU because of the reduction of vaccine supplies to the community. According to her, in the first quarter of 2021 the company supplied to the EU only 30% of the agreed amount of the drug.
