EU urges Turkey to abandon exploration in disputed waters

EU leaders called on the country to “work to ease tensions on a permanent and sustainable basis.”

The leaders of the EU member states called on Turkey to abandon exploration activities in the Mediterranean. This statement was made following a two-day summit of the heads of state and government of the EU countries in Brussels on Friday 6 October 16.

“The EU Council calls on Turkey to abandon these actions and work to alleviate tensions on a permanent and sustainable basis,” the statement said.

Recall that earlier Turkey began seismic work in the Mediterranean. The Oruc Reis vessel is capable of conducting shelf exploration at a depth of 8,000 to 15,000 meters.
