The European Union can respond to Russia’s sanctions imposed on European politicians. This statement was made by the heads of three institutions: the European Council, the European Commission, and the European Parliament. They called it retaliatory measures.
The EU reserves the right to take appropriate measures in response to the decision of the Russian authorities, “ the document says.
On May 30, Russia imposed sanctions against eight EU citizens. They were banned from entering the country. Among others was the head of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, who after such news said that “ Russia will not be able to shut up the European Parliament, and it will continue to protect human rights, democracy, and freedom.”
Vera Yurova, Vice-President of the European Commission for European Values and Transparency, was also blacklisted.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that Russia was forced to respond to the previously imposed EU sanctions against the Russians on March 2 and 22.
Earlier it was written that the European Union cannot put pressure on Russia through private autonomous organizations, such as SWIFT, because they have the right not to obey the European Parliament. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrel.
