“Donor” scandal in Bulgaria: the organs of Ukrainians were sold to rich foreigners

For two years, rich people from Israel, Japan, and Oman bought and received the internal organs of poor Ukrainians in Bulgaria

The Bulgarian government has officially announced organ transplants of Ukrainian citizens to rich foreigners who were passed off as their relatives.

This is reported by Euractiv.

Bulgaria’s Health Minister Stoiko Katsarov claims that at least 14 liver transplants from living donors have been performed in the past two years. All of them were held in one of the state hospitals.

All donors were from Ukraine or Moldova. Citizens of richer countries — Israel, Oman, or -received organs.

At the same time, in the documents, the donors were registered as “nephews” of their rich “uncles”, but the Bulgarian Ministry of Health found that the recipients of the organs were registered under false names, so there is “every reason to believe that they are not relatives.”

It is worth noting that the relationship between the participants of the transplant is a prerequisite for such an operation in Bulgaria.

Journalists note that this is the first time that the Bulgarian government has confirmed rumors about “black transplant”, although it is afraid of the international resonance that this may receive.
