In the African state of Mali, as a result of a vehicle hitting a mine, one UN peacekeeper was killed and another was seriously injured. This was announced on Friday, October 16, by Xinhua, citing a statement by the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali (MINUSMA).
It is noted that the incident took place in the northeastern region of the Kidal country. The UN did not specify the nationality of the deceased and wounded peacekeepers.
“MINUSMA will not be intimidated by such attacks, we remain determined to support the people and government of Mali in their efforts to bring peace back to the country,” said Mahamat Saleh Annadif, UN Special Representative for Mali.
He added that attacks against UN peacekeepers could constitute war crimes under international law.
We will remind, in May this year in Mali, three UN peacekeepers were killed in an explosion. A detachment of peacekeeping forces was attacked while patrolling near the village of Agelhok in the Kidal region.
The MINUSMA mission was launched in 2013 to support the political process in Mali. During a coup d’etat, militants took control of the north of the country in 2012. Peace was concluded in 2015 between the Mali government and various armed groups through UN mediation. But the situation in the country has not stabilized.
