US President Joe Biden has proposed the candidacy of Russia expert Celeste Wallander for the post of assistant chief of the Pentagon for international affairs, according to the White House website on June 22.
To get the position, she still needs to get congressional approval.
Wallander currently heads the US-Russia Foundation. In the Obama administration, she oversaw the Russian direction in the National Security Council (NSC) at the White House.
In addition, she has published more than 80 publications on Russia’s international and defense strategy, as well as on the topic of European and Eurasian security.
On January 22, the U.S. Senate confirmed Lloyd Austin for the post of Secretary of Defense. He became the first African-American to hold the post.
