Biden wants to appoint the developer of sanctions against Russia as head of the CIA

US Democratic President-elect Joseph Biden wants to appoint David Cohen as head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), who previously worked on sanctions against Russia and investigated Moscow’s “interference” in the elections. The New York Times newspaper writes about this, citing sources.

It is clarified that Biden has not yet made a final decision, it will depend on the distribution of other posts, in particular, the head of the Justice Department and the head of the Pentagon. However, according to the publication, key advisers have declared Biden’s sympathy for Cohen. In addition, the candidate for the post of head of National Intelligence Avril Haynes approved his candidacy.

Michael Morrell remains the second candidate for the post of CIA director. According to the newspaper, under the predecessor of the current US President Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Morrell was the deputy head of the department and twice acted in his duties. However, some lawmakers are against his candidacy because in the past he has supported programs that involve torture.

In 2015-2017, Cohen, according to The New York Times, was involved in a joint investigation by the CIA, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the US Department of Homeland Security of interference in the 2016 presidential election, which Trump won, attributed to Russia. In addition, while working at the Ministry of Finance, he oversaw issues related to sanctions against Russia and Iran.

Earlier it was reported that Biden had decided on the candidacy for the post of Secretary of State. The post may be filled by Tony Blinken, a diplomat and longtime ally of Biden. Other candidates are Senators Chris Coos and Chris Murphy, former First Undersecretary of State and Ambassador to Russia William Burns and former Obama National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
