Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida has confirmed the deaths of at least two people in a powerful explosion in a residential building in the center of the Spanish capital.

“Let me make a preliminary assessment, taking into account all the conditions. Probably, a gas explosion occurred in a residential building in La Paloma. At least two people were killed,” the mayor said.
Several people were reportedly injured. Police sources speak of a child who was wounded by shrapnel.
A fire broke out in the building after the explosion. Firefighters and rescuers work on site.
Experts also check how damaged the neighboring buildings, including the nursing home, are. 60 of its residents will be relocated to local hotels.
