WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is going to get married in prison with his fiancee Stella Maurice, she said in an interview with DPA.
Maurice noted that she and Assange have been engaged since 2016. The date of the wedding has not yet been set, as, according to her, they are going through the necessary bureaucratic procedures for this. They need to get permission from the head of Belmarsh prison, where Assange is being held, and also solve the problem with the expired visa of the WikiLeaks founder, who has Australian citizenship. In addition, the situation was aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic.
Maurice conveyed the words of the prison staff, who noted that in 12 years of work in Belmarsh, there have not yet been any wedding ceremonies. Assange’s fiancee added that if they do get married, then after the journalist’s release they will arrange another celebration with family and friends.
The relationship between Assange and Maurice began when he was hiding in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. Currently, the couple already has two children-sons aged two and four years.
In January, a London court refused to release Julian Assange on bail. This means that Assange will be in prison until the US appeal in the extradition case is considered.
