French maritime services intercepted several boats with illegal migrants onboard, which were trying to cross the Strait of Pas-de-Calais to get to the UK. As reported on Friday, in the prefecture of the English Channel and North Sea zone, a total of 80 people were rescued.
“The Regional Operational Monitoring and Rescue Center (CROSS) at Cape Gris-Ne reported several migrant boats that were in distress in the waters of the Pas-de-Calais,” the statement said.
According to the authorities, rescuers found 42 migrants on two boats. They were taken ashore to the port of Boulogne-sur-Mer, where they were examined by doctors. After that, rescuers removed another 38 illegal immigrants from another boat and transported them to the port of Calais.
According to the prefecture of the region, in 2020, there were more than 9.6 thousand attempts to illegally cross the border with the UK through the English Channel. At least six people were killed and at least three others were missing while trying to cross the Strait by boat. A total of 868 rescue operations were carried out. In 2019, the total number of detainees was almost 2.3 thousand.
